It raised $40 million on Sept. 30.

Miter, a San Francisco company that sells payroll, HR, time tracking and field software to contractors, announced a $40 million Series B round on September 30, 2026. Battery Ventures led the round, with Bessemer Venture Partners and Coatue taking part, and Miter has now raised $78 million in total, according to its release. The release names two places where the AI features sit: back-office processing of invoices, receipts and pay rate tables, and field safety reporting, where a crew member’s photo or voice note becomes an observation or incident report.

What it does

Miter began as construction payroll, and that is still the core. The software handles job costing to cost codes, certified payroll reports for prevailing wage jobs, union rules and tax withholding for crews that cross state lines. The release says the AI reads invoices, receipts and pay rate tables and shows labor and job cost trends while a job is still open. The daily users are the controller or payroll administrator and the project accountant.

The safety product launched on May 4, 2026, and is the newer piece. A foreman or crew member photographs a hazard or records a voice memo on a phone, and Miter turns it into a structured observation or incident report with the hazard type, severity and description filled in. A worker can dictate in Spanish and the office receives the report in English, and the app works offline and syncs later. The safety manager reviews the draft, then assigns a corrective action with an owner and a due date.

Safety leads can also generate a toolbox talk from a topic such as heat illness, or a job hazard analysis from a description of the task. Because hours worked already sit in the same system, Miter calculates TRIR and DART from actual hours. TRIR, the total recordable incident rate, is the count of OSHA recordable cases times 200,000, divided by hours worked. BLS explains that 200,000 hours stands for 100 employees working 40 hours a week for 50 weeks. DART uses the same formula for cases with days away, restricted duty or job transfer. Miter also generates OSHA Forms 300, 301 and 300A.

Customers named in the release include Clayco and Haugland Group.

Evidence so far

The evidence so far is Miter’s press release, a post by CEO Connor Watumull, and customer stories on Miter’s website. These are the figures Miter has published:

Series B size and total raised

$40 million round, $78 million raised in total

Miter press release

Contractors on the platform

More than 2,000

Miter press release

Share of US construction workers paid through Miter

Roughly 2 of every 100

Miter press release and CEO post

People paid through Miter each week

About 100,000

Miter CEO post

Customer count since the May 2025 Series A

Tripled (release), nearly tripled (CEO post)

Miter press release and CEO post

Products launched in the last six months

Safety, Performance, Data Studio, Accounts Payable

Miter CEO post

Weekly payroll hours at Almendariz Consulting

About 30 before Miter and about 2 after

Almendariz controller in a Miter customer story

Source: prnewswire.com

The share of workers and the weekly headcount do not line up neatly when you check them against BLS.

BLS puts construction employment at 8,364,000 in September 2026, seasonally adjusted and preliminary.

Two of every 100 would be about 167,000 workers.

Watumull’s post describes the system as one that “pays a hundred thousand people every week.”

One reading is that the ratio counts everyone paid over a longer period, such as a year, which runs higher than a weekly count on a seasonal workforce. Another is that Miter used a different base than the BLS construction sector. The release gives the ratio without its base, so either reading fits.

The measured results on Miter’s site cover payroll. At Almendariz Consulting, a California traffic control contractor with 70 to 100 employees, the controller says payroll fell from about 30 hours a week to about 2. Other customer stories listed on the safety page report payroll time cuts of 60% at Green Mechanical and 75% at W.J. O’Neil. Those stories describe payroll and onboarding automation.

For the AI features themselves, the evidence is product description and one customer comment. An executive at Rubicon Applied Divers, a commercial diving and marine contractor, is quoted on the safety page saying, “The transparency into TRIR and who signed off on safety meetings is bar none the best.” Accuracy rates for the photo and voice reports and the invoice reading, and time saved per report, are not yet public.

How to measure it on your projects

Track safety observations logged per 1,000 crew hours, by job. Count every hazard and behavior observation submitted in a month, leave out incident reports, divide by the hours worked on that job that month, and multiply by 1,000. If the photo and voice capture lowers the effort of reporting, as Miter says it does, this rate should rise on the pilot job.

Capture the baseline before the pilot:

Pick one job with a stable crew size for the next three months.

Count the observation cards or app entries from that job for the last three months.

Pull the hours worked on that job from payroll for the same months, and compute the rate for each month.

During the pilot, keep the same count. Also pull 20 AI-drafted reports and note how many fields the safety manager changed before closing each one.

A first step this week is to pull last quarter’s observation cards for one job and the matching payroll hours.

Availability and cost

Miter Safety has been available since its May launch. Miter’s site sends buyers to a demo request, and the pages opened for this post list no price sheet. The Almendariz customer story gives one data point, a cost of about $2,200 a month for that 70 to 100 person firm’s use of Miter’s payroll and HR product. The safety page lists integrations with Procore, Sage, QuickBooks and NetSuite, among others, and a REST API.
